The UK to introduce CDS – the new “Customs Declaration Service”

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is gradually introducing the Customs Declaration Service, the long-term replacement for the current Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system

The Customs Declaration Service supports making import and export declarations when moving goods into and out of the UK.

HMRC will be closing the current declaration system (CHIEF) in two stages:

  1. On 30 September 2022: the ability to make import declarations will end
  2. On 31 March 2023: the ability to make export declarations will end

In its place, the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) will serve as the UK’s single customs platform, with all businesses needing to declare goods through CDS after 31 March.
