Port dues are becoming more expensive in Bremen and Bremerhaven

In the beginning of the next year the sailings into the ports of Bremen/Bremerhaven are going to rise to 5% more expensive. The port committee of the Bremen Parliament approved this change in the port fee schedule on Wednesday afternoon. Due to the currently poor economic situation, the increase was kept significantly lower than would be required by inflation. The moderate increase is justifiable for port customers because handling has increased significantly. The fees are necessary to ensure the expansion and maintenance of the ports in Bremen and Bremerhaven, explained Claudia Schilling (SPD). This is the only way the ports can remain competitive. According to the port department, the fees in the state of Bremen were last increased by an average of two percent on January 1, 2022. There was no increase in 2020 due to poor economic forecasts, the upcoming Brexit and the trade conflict between the USA and China. An increase was also waived in 2021 to accommodate port customers in the pandemic.
