More freight vehicle kilometres than before Corona

In the year 2021, Dutch freight vehicles covered more kilometres than the previous year. In the year before the Corona pandemic (2019), the number of kilometres was also lower than in 2021. All this is according to the latest figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). In total, some 18.8 billion kilometres were driven by all vans, almost a billion more than in 2020 and 400 million more than in 2019.

This is mainly due to a 4% increase in the number of vans compared to 2019. In fact, the number of kilometres driven per van decreased by about 1%. Besides vans, trucks also started driving more in 2021. In total, about 9.8 billion kilometres were driven, 3% more than in 2020 and 0.4% more than in 2019. Unlike freight transport, the Dutch did leave the car at home more often. Consequently, the average annual consumption of passenger cars was 11,000 kilometres, some 16% less than in 2019.
