Market development October
You will no doubt notice that import tariffs from the Far East are falling. Reduced tariffs are coming in weekly, confirming once again that tariffs are falling.
This is also confirmed by a number of measurable indices. The Drewery indicates that the average rate for a 40’ft container is around USD 4500, where the Shanghai freight index for a 20’ft indicates USD 2581. The difference between these indices is that the Drewery is based on all rates and the Shanghai Freight only looks at carrier rates. In comparison to last month, rates have fallen by a whopping 38%. This is expected to continue to fall for a while, but with shipping companies decommissioning ships (Blanc Sailings), there could possibly even be a rise again. Both indexes can be seen below, which clearly shows the drop in rates.
